Portland Considers Improved Human Rights Screen
As local governments and institutions across the nation choose to divest from Israel, Portland City Council voted on Dec 3 to consider a human rights screen for next year. Local coalition Oregon for Human Rights continues to organize support for a robust screen that accounts for tech companies’ involvement in the genocide in Gaza and their support of US immigration. A screen could also cover labor rights and environmental concerns.
Meanwhile, pressure from the public and legal aid groups force corporations to consider their support of Israel. The city of Portland has approximately $30 million invested in Microsoft according to the October report.
